Sublimated T-Shirts in Guatemala: What They Are and When They're Convenient

A sublimated T-shirt is a garment where the design is transferred to the fabric with heat, fusing the ink into the fiber rather than sitting on top of it. The result is a print that is imperceptible to the touch, won't crack, and is very durable, but with one key condition: sublimation only works well on polyester or high-polyester blends, ideally in light colors. In this guide, we explain how it works, when it's better than DTF or screen printing, and what blank you need for your brand in Guatemala.

Sublimation fuses the ink into the fiber: that's why it only works on polyester.

What is a sublimated T-shirt?

Sublimation uses heat and pressure to convert special ink into a gas that integrates into the polyester fiber. Since the design is within the fabric and not on top, the print is imperceptible to the touch, doesn't crack or peel, and allows for full garment coverage (all-over print) with vibrant colors. It's ideal for full-color designs and edge-to-edge patterns.

What fabric do you need for sublimation?

This is the non-negotiable rule: sublimation requires polyester or high-polyester blends. On cotton, the color won't set and washes out quickly. Additionally, it works best on light-colored fabrics, because the ink is translucent and doesn't cover well on dark backgrounds. When is sublimation suitable?

It is suitable when you want full-color, photographic, or all-over designs on light-colored polyester garments: sports jerseys, team T-shirts, running clothes, or all-over designs. It is not suitable if your brand wants premium cotton garments or prints on dark colors; in those cases, DTF or screen printing are better.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sublimated T-shirt?

It is a T-shirt where the design is transferred with heat and fused into the polyester fiber. The print is imperceptible to the touch, does not crack, and allows for full-color, all-over coverage.

Can you sublimate on cotton?

Not durably. Sublimation only adheres to polyester or high-polyester blends. For cotton, DTF or screen printing is more suitable.

Does sublimation work on dark garments?

It is not recommended. Sublimation ink is translucent and does not cover dark backgrounds well, which is why it works best on light fabrics.

Which lasts longer, sublimation or DTF?

Both are very durable. Sublimation is imperceptible and doesn't crack because it's within the fiber, but it's limited to light polyester. DTF works on more fabrics and colors.

When is sublimation suitable for my brand?

When you want full-color or all-over designs on light polyester garments, such as sportswear or jerseys. For premium cotton, choose another technique.
