At Básicos Guatemala we work with cotton blanks, not polyester — that's why we don't offer sublimation directly. Sublimation needs fabric with a high polyester content for the ink to set properly; on cotton, the result can come out pale and lose color with washing. What is sublimation and why don't we offer it?

Sublimation turns ink into gas under heat and fuses it with polyester fibers. It gives very vivid colors and allows full-color designs with no limit, but it only works well on fabrics with a high polyester content — our blanks are made of cotton and are designed for customizing with DTF, screen printing, or embroidery, not for sublimation.

DTF: the alternative we do offer

DTF (Direct to Film) is the technique we recommend for full-color designs, photographs, or gradients — the same kind of design usually sought with sublimation. The difference: DTF is printed on film and transferred with heat, so it works well on cotton, does not require polyester fabric and, in general, does not demand runs as large as traditional sublimation.

Sublimation vs. DTF — the real comparison

• Fabric required: Sublimation requires polyester. DTF works on cotton, polyester, or blends.
• Colors and detail: Both techniques allow full-color, photographs, and gradients with no color limit.
• Feel: Sublimation fuses with the fabric (zero texture). DTF leaves a thin layer on top of the fabric.
• Number of pieces: DTF works well even for individual pieces; sublimation usually requires larger runs to be cost-effective.
• Durability: With proper care (wash inside out, cold water), both can hold up well through washing.
